2. Competition

MASTIQ addresses one of the most persistent and expensive production diseases in European dairy farming: mastitis. Our objective is to move small and mid-sized farms from reactive treatment of clinical cases to predictive, cow-level management of udder health, using hardware they can install on the parlour they already own.

The concept rests on three pillars. First, a retrofit sensing kit: inline conductivity and temperature probes that clip onto an existing milking cluster and require no modification of the parlour, no dedicated milk line and no civil works. The specific objectives of the project are: (O1) to industrialise the prototype sensor kit from TRL 5 to TRL 8, including housing, cleaning-in-place resistance and a two-year field lifetime; (O2) to raise predictive performance from 0.86 to at least 0.92 AUC on farms never seen during training, validated across three countries and two milking-system families; (O3) to complete on-farm validation on 40 commercial farms covering at least 6,000 cows and 18 months of continuous operation; (O4) to obtain CE marking and complete the regulatory and data-governance package required for EU-wide commercialisation; and (O5) to demonstrate a total cost of ownership below EUR 4 per cow per month, the threshold identified in our customer interviews as the point where adoption becomes automatic.

Ambition beyond the state of the art lies in the combination of retrofit hardware and cross-farm generalisation. Existing herd-health systems achieve comparable accuracy only inside the parlour ecosystem they are sold with, and only after a farm-specific calibration period. MASTIQ targets out-of-the-box performance on an unseen farm within 14 days of installation, which is what makes a subscription model viable for herds of 40 to 200 cows.

The challenge is structural rather than scientific. Mastitis costs European dairy farmers an estimated EUR 200-350 per affected cow per year through discarded milk, veterinary treatment, reduced yield and premature culling, and subclinical cases — the ones that never become visibly obvious — account for the majority of that loss.
